Description

I purchased this piece from Galerie Daniel Maghen in March 2024.

Some history below:

I asked the CEO of Superani, Hyun Jin Kim, about some information about this piece but he did not recall the details as it was fairly old. He did, however, confirm my suspicion that this was for one of his earlier comics as pieces similar to this one were was featured in the 2007 sketch collection.

Little did I know that this comic series was actually KJG's first ever released work!

The comic name was Funny Funny (퍼니퍼니) and ran in the Korean manhwa magazine Young Jump from 2002 to 2003. There is very little info on this online, but after a while I found an archive which shows both the cover of the magazine and lists the contents for the 16th 2002 issue (the first one mentioning KJG) on on kmas.or.kr . The contents read:

Funny Funny - Kim Jung Gi
"Finally kick-starting my career!!"

Unfortunately, I have not managed to find a copy of the magazine yet, but I am talking to some Korean collectors who, hopefully, will help me out soon!

I also found a funny comment from 2002 on a Korean forum during the launch of the comic saying:

"THIS PERSON IS INCREDIBLE!
Does anyone know Kim Jeong-gi? This guy's manga is appearing on Young Jump - who is he? I couldn't find much online but he is amazing!!!"
